Digital fabrication presents many opportunities for craftspeople and industrial manufacturers to develop new production approaches to production, inspiring new models and product aesthetics. With this approach, we strive to increase the individual character of materials and process-related material effects in industrial or semi-industrial products and thereby elevate the product's quality and appreciation.

 

As a case study, we custom build a machine for digital crafting. The setup consists of a turntable and a two-axis arm that can feel an objects surface and react to it similar to how a craftsperson would. With this soft touch machine, we are exploring the translation of programmed commands into tangible material. Currently we are working with layered porcelain and subtractive techniques such as scraping and cutting.

In their digital craft based practice they challenge the boundaries of materials and manufacturing processes and experiment with new production methods and models. They use digital technologies like robotics to enable new material-driven production that draws on the richness of crafted objects. In their practice digital tools are especially interesting for the design and manufacturing of products as they allow for both larger quantities and high flexibility at the same time.
